Water research at the University of Glasgow

Water and the Environment

We undertake research to understand better environmental resilience and response of our aquatic environment to environmental stressors such as climate change, water regulation and pollution, and to develop approaches to protect our aquatic environment from these stressors.

Our research focuses on the role of water as a transporting agent of essential elements and pollutants, the reprocessing of material within water, the capacity for and rate by which material is transported, the impact of flow on aquatic biodiversity, and the control of water-borne diseases. We develop models to describe these processes and water quality and quantity, such that we better understand and alleviate adverse consequences for humankind and other living organisms. We seek to use smart technology to improve understanding through higher resolutions signals and improved accuracy.
